In addition to his original music, he performs acoustic shows (solo or with additional musicians as Bret Helm & Friends) with a unique range of cover songs, emphasizing the classic 80s/90s alternative era - The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen. Duran Duran, Psychedelic Furs, OMD, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, New Order, Joy Division, U2, Social Distortion, The Church, Gin Blossoms, Pixies, Modern English, Mazzy Star, Oasis etc. Other artists often featured in his set: David Bowie, The National, Gram Parsons, Ryan Adams, Neil Diamond, Lou Reed, George Jones, Poison, etc.
